Frequently Asked Questions

Why a song portrait?

Because a personal song goes straight to a person’s heart like nothing can.

People in our culture are starved for appreciation. Most are seen, honored, and appreciated the deepest at their funeral. And often when you appreciate someone directly they don’t take it all in. People are not taught how to let in love, and are not accustomed to receiving. It can be embarrassing, or even scary to let love in. Somehow a song sidesteps and bypasses people’s usual defenses.

A Song Portrait expresses your feelings playfully, profoundly, and poetically. It catches people deliciously off guard. It reaches them at a heart level like nothing can. They feel seen, honored, and saturated with love. And they get to come back to it over and over again for the rest of their lives.

How is it recorded?

The Quickie Song Portrait ($300) is recorded on Zoom as it comes through me in the moment. I then send you the link. As the price point goes up, so does the sound quality. At a certain point I use a professional recording studio, a guitar player far more skilled than I, other instruments, and backing vocalists to add harmonies if desired.

What’s up with all the different prices? I’m confused. Please clarify.

Yes, it can be confusing. That’s partly why I offer a fifteen minute free consultation. I also recommend listening to the sample songs to get a sense of how far you might want to go with this. The most popular song, affectionately called The Quickie, costs a fixed $300. When people want a more in depth carefully crafted song with lots of details from someone’s life, it takes a while to put it put it all together. The price varies, depending on the time I spend writing it, whether or not you want it professionally recorded, and whether or not you would like to include skilled musicians, background vocals, etc.

Will I be able to see the progress and give feedback as it’s being written?

Yes. Yes. Yes. I want to make sure you are thoroughly satisfied with every word! With all songs except The Quickie, when I am about halfway done with the lyrics, I will email you what I have, and ask you for feedback. Then, when I think it is complete, I send it to you for one more critique before recording.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. Not everyone wants or needs to chat with me first, but for many, a fifteen minute conversation with me will be beneficial to the process. Email me at scottkgrace@gmail.com to set up a time.

Some of the sample songs have pictures. Is that included in the service?

No. The videos were done by my clients. Is that Included in the Service? (All I did was take the capital off of That so it reads that). You can pay for a pro to do it, get a tech savvy family member to do it for you, or do it yourself. A picture is worth a thousand words, and turning the song into a video will significantly maximize the emotional impact for the recipient, and for you!

How do we begin?

Send me an email at scottkgrace@gmail.com and let me know if you want a consultation, or if you know what you want and prefer to jump in. When you email me I will send you certain questions to answer so that I can write lyrics filled with personal details of the song receiver’s life. You send me a deposit, and away we go!

How much time do you need to write and deliver a song?

A Quickie is simply a matter of setting up a one hour Zoom session with me. By the time that hour is completed, the song will be in your email inbox. The more extensive songs can take from one to three months. Rush songs are possible, but we would have to discuss a different price.
